    Abstract

The essential guide for students and professionals working in computer hardware design and synthesis.

The authors describe the basic concepts of VHDL and VHDL-AMS and their application in both behavioural and synthesizable modelling of digital systems.

The accompanying CD-ROMs include a workshop and reference material for online use. Together with several demo versions of VHDL related tools the reader will be able to make himself familiar with the use of VHDL for simulation and synthesis.

    Intention of the Authors

The authors of this book held lectures at university and training courses for engineers for many years and gained practical knowledge from several industrial design projects.
They realized that teaching the principles behind the pure syntax is especially important for successful application of VHDL.
Additionally they were looking for a comprehensive, yet clear language reference giving quick access to information about specific constructs together with examples of usage.

Third, they dislike academic "hello world" examples and prefer to present the students more realistic problems.
The structure of the book reflects all these aspects.

    Book Structure

    Tutorial

The tutorial section is tailored especially for beginners. It explains the VHDL syntax together with the principles of digital hardware design for simulation and synthesis.
The content is provided in the form of commented slides. A concise representation of the essential information is explained in detail in the corresponding comment sections. This format is especially useful for learning and teaching VHDL.
An additional chapter covers VHDL-AMS, the new standard for modelling and simulating mixed signal devices.

    Reference

The reference section provides in depth coverage of the VHDL standard for digital systems in a user friendly way.

In addition to detailed syntax descriptions several examples of usage are given as well.

    Workshop

The design workshop confronts the reader with an actual design task. This allows beginners to put their VHDL skills into practice. The circuit is partitioned into several modules focussing on different aspects of the language.

    CD ROM

The following features are included on the CDs:
